A Layton woman was listed in critical condition Wednesday in a Bountiful hospital after losing her unborn child from injuries in a traffic accident Tuesday morning in Layton, then undergoing more than two hours of surgery.

Fatima Phillips, 32, was a passenger in a van that was struck by a car in the intersection of Main Street and Hill Field Road at about 10 a.m. Tuesday. The impact rolled the van over and into a third vehicle waiting at the light, Layton Police Sgt. Dale May reported.

Phillips was taken to Lakeview Hospital where a spokesman said she underwent extensive surgery. Her unborn child could not be saved, according to the spokesman. She is in the hospital's intensive care unit. Neither the Layton police or the hospital reported the stage of development of the unborn child.
