Harold E. Van Wagenen, a former mayor of Provo and former co-owner of a radio station, died Jan. 28, 1992, of a heart attack in Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. He was 82.
Mr. Van Wagenen served as mayor from 1955 to 1957. During his administration the city annexed more than 20 properties, including the Edgemont area. His father, Alma Van Wagenen, also was Provo mayor, serving from 1928 to 1930.He received a bachelor's degree in economics from Brigham Young University and worked for several companies, including Utah Power & Light Co. and Columbia Steel. At the latter firm he helped hire more than 6,200 men for the newly constructed Geneva Steel plant.
In cooperation with his brother, Mr. Van Wagenen opened radio station KCSU, later renamed KIXX, in 1947. He worked full-time as mayor during the day, often working during the night at the radio station. He was president of the Utah Broadcasters Association, managed the Rodeway Inn and worked from 1972 to 1982 at ZCMI in University Mall.
He was a member of the State Board of Corrections, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, International Footprinters Association and the Utah Valley Wildlife Protective Association.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Berg Mortuary, 185 E. Center St., Provo, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and one hour before services Monday. Burial will be in the Provo City Cemetery.
