The Sanpete County Commission has filled a newly established position with the appointment of Dale L. Nicholls, Ephraim, as the county building inspector/zoning administrator.
Nicholls' appointment was effective Jan. 2. His office will be at the county courthouse in Manti. He will operate a countywide building inspection service and also administer the county's new zoning ordinance that applies to the unincorporated areas of Sanpete County. The commission has allocated about $37,000 to the new service in its 1972 budget. However, it expects the service to be financially self-sustaining, with fees providing the funding. Nicholls' salary is negotiable, but will be in the $20,000 range.
The new position was established in response to a state mandate that building inspectors be state certified to assure compliance with building codes.
Most Sanpete County cities have entered into contracts with the county for this service because state certified inspectors are rare in rural areas.
Nicholls graduated from Utah Technical College, Provo, at the top of his class in drafting and design in 1970 and was then employed by Snow College in building operation and maintenance until 1973, when he became the sole owner of Ephraim Construction Co.
