An 18-year-old Taylorsville man accidentally shot himself in the foot last week while talking to his girlfriend on the telephone.

Dustin Lyman had apparently been drinking and had called his girlfriend at about 3 a.m. New Year's Day to apologize for an argument the two had had the previous day, according to a Salt Lake County sheriff's report. While they were talking, the girlfriend, 17, heard a loud bang in the background. Lyman, reportedly playing with a .44-caliber Magnum handgun, told her he had just shot himself in the foot.

The bullet went through the back side of his lower leg, through his ankle and out the front of his foot. He was taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital, where he was treated for the injury.

Though Lyman's father is a Salt Lake police sergeant, the gun belonged to the victim, the report states.
