Stanford and BYU are the men's gymnastics team favorites in this weekend's 12-team Spartan Open. The two-day meet has team competition on Friday and individual competition on Saturday.

Jing-Wei Liang, Jason Brown and Ritchie Ellis are the all-arounders in BYU's 11-man contingent."The word is out and we are no longer a secret," says Cougar coach Makoto Sakamoto, referring to BYU's scare against top-ranked Nebraska. BYU finished second to Nebraska, 279.90-278.60, at last month's Rocky Mountain Open, and the Cougars defeated defending NCAA champion Oklahoma (273.80).

Liang's first-place finishes in the floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars and horizontal bar paced the Cougar efforts in that meet.

The Cougars open their home dual season in Provo when they host Arizona State Jan. 17.
