Isabelle Huppert made her operatic debut as Joan of Arc, tied to a stake 20 feet above a stage.

The actress said she's trying to portray the character as energetic and strong, but terrified of being burned to death. "I wanted her to be frightened because it makes her seem more real," she told the newspaper Le Parisien.Huppert has a speaking part but doesn't sing in the production at the Opera Bastille. The work, "Jeanne au Bucher," is a dramatic poem by Paul Claudel that was set to music by composer Arthur Honegger in 1938.
