At Springville, the resurgent Tooele Buffaloes pulled off a 45-20 upset of the second-ranked Red Devils to push onward in the 3A State Playoffs.

The game was a back-and-forth affair through the first quarter as Springville drew first blood, but Tooele evened the score on a 34-yard interception return by Eros Arevelo. The Red Devils took a 14-7 lead, but that in turn was erased by Robert Cisco's 85-yard kickoff return for a TD.Tooele started to widen the gap in the second quarter as Jason Brown and Aaron Thomas, Tooele's potent backfield tandem, both scored TDs.

Springville coach Doug Bills blamed turnovers for his team's demise. "We had seven turnovers . . . we probably doubled their yardage, but turnovers led to scores and good field position for them and they took advantage."

Brown added another touchdown later in the game on a 2-yard run. Scott Pratt also plunged across from 2 yards out to help the Tooele attack. Also complementing the Buffaloes' offensive barrage was a 34-yard field goal by Peter Pankratz.

Tooele will now face Box Elder next Saturday in second round action at Box Elder at 1 p.m.
