Hiroshima police set up a special squad to investigate the source of a cyanide-containing substance that resulted in the deaths of thousands of fish and temporarily stopped the water supply to more than 980,000 people, officials said Saturday.

The dead fish were spotted Friday in the Ota River by alarmed citizens of the port city near the southern tip of the main Japanese island of Honshu.
