Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Bob Bennett and the American Constitutional Law Foundation Inc. filed a lawsuit in Federal District Court and called the contemplated federal pay increase for Congress members intended to take effect in January unconstitutional.

"This lawsuit is intended to confirm for members of the Congress and others," Bennett said. "The accountability to the electoriate for their conduct as was intended by the framers of the Constitution and, more specifically, by James Madison, the Father of the Constitution."Bennett said the $345 a month raise is not a cost-of-living adjustment and called it an outrageous $1.4 million money grab.

The lawsuit is based upon the Madison Amendment which recently became the 27th Amendment to the Constitution.
