The mother of an 8-year-old girl in San Diego says U.S. Rep. Bill Lowery used his influence to help a former aide accused of molesting his daughter, according to court papers.

The case was reported Sunday by The San Diego Union-Tribune, which withheld the family's names to protect the girl's identity. The mother's claim, filed last month, said the public defender's office bowed to Lowery's influence in the custody battle and gave the father extensive visitation privileges, "totally disregarding" the child's best interests.

Lowery, R-Calif., acknowledged making phone calls and attending a court session, but denied pressuring anyone in the case.
