Dorothy Dobson, a fifth-grade teacher at Edith Bowen Laboratory School at Utah State University, is in Detroit this week receiving the National Elementary Social Science Teacher of the Year Award from the National Council of Social Sciences.
Dobson, a graduate of USU in elementary and special education, earned a master's degree from the University of Utah. She has been teaching elementary school for 18 years, the past 10 at Bowen School."I believe the key to education is using the entire curriculum to teach social studies and to use social studies to teach the entire curriculum," the nation's top teacher stated.
"Life isn't broke into curriculum areas - we need to integrate all learning to show kids that everything is connected, show them that what we're teaching isn't just to use until graduation. They need to make learning a life skill."
Dobson was Utah's Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 1991.
