Brigham Young University-Hawaii President Alton L. Wade has announced that Barbara Jean Velasco has joined LDS Foundation with the specific assignment of directing all development activities at BYU-Hawaii.
Velasco will work with Napua Baker, who was recently named vice president for university advancement. Her position, however, comes under the larger organization of LDS Foundation, which encourages and facilitates philanthropic gifts to projects and programs sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.She will oversee all university philanthropic activities and identifying, cultivating and serving donors and prospective donors, working closely with university administrators, church leaders, professionals, alumni and other close friends of the campus.
For the past 30 years, Velasco has been active in coaching, advising, organizing and promoting BYU-Hawaii athletic events. Her husband, the late John Velasco, was active for many years in coaching and athletic circles in Hawaii.
She recently received the Honolulu Quarterback Club's Neil Blaisdell Sportsperson of the Year Award and the BYU-Hawaii Distinguished Service Award for her "career-long devotion" to excellence in athletics among the youth of Hawaii.
