Mr. Torkildson's letter (Forum, Oct. 11) was based on the premise that BYU's purpose for students is to "enter to learn, go forth to earn." May we correct him in saying that the university's motto is "Enter to learn, go forth to serve." Service is something both sexes should be equally qualified for.
Education is supposed to make us well-rounded, prepare us for a lifetime of learning, instill in us an appreciation for the wonders of this world and enable us to be better citizens and contributors to society. Both sexes should be equally trained in those areas. And if we and other qualified and worthy women can make the entrance requirements, we have as much right and need to be here as any of our brethren.
