A 4th District judge granted separate trials for a Spanish Fork woman and her live-in boyfriend charged with killing the woman's 14-month-old daughter.

Christy Lyn Barney, 17, and Gerald Gene Blubaugh, 24, are charged with one count each of first-degree murder for allegedly killing Faith Nicole Barney. The infant died Aug. 8 at Primary Children's Medical Center, three days after she was admitted to Mountain View Hospital. An assistant state medical examiner testified at the pair's preliminary hearing that the child died from battered-child syndrome.Judge Lynn W. Davis set Barney's trial for Feb. 16. Barney asked for a trial within 30 days, but Davis turned down the request because Barney is pregnant and expected to give birth within the next two weeks.

Because Blubaugh's attorney withdrew as counsel, Davis appointed a public defender to the case and will set a trial date for him next week.
