A total of $57,139 in renewed federal funds has been awarded to the Salt Lake County Retired Senior Volunteer Program through a one-year grant issued by the program's regional office, the federal domestic volunteer agency, in Denver, Colo.

Don Cook, Salt Lake County Aging Services program manager, said Action, which nationally administers the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and other community-based programs, notified him of the renewal earlier this month.Cook said the grant will be matched with locally raised funds provided by the Salt Lake County Board of Commissioners to support volunteers who work in schools, nursing homes, senior centers, hospitals and other services.

Last year, the program accounted for more than 262,700 hours of community service. People wanting to volunteer are encouraged to call 468-2490 for more information.
