Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, says President Bush's pardon of former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and other Iran-Contra defendants is just.

"I know he is right in doing this. It's what I called for all along," said Hatch, who was a key defender of the Reagan administration during Iran-Contra hearings."This has been criminalization of policy differences between the executive branch and Congress. It has been political persecution," Hatch said.

"(Special prosecutor Lawrence) Walsh brought counts with thin evidence that nobody else in the Justice Department would ever have done."

"To bring charges like this against someone like Cap Weinberger, who is well known for his integrity, was ridiculous. This pardon will also improve morale at the CIA. People like Clair George (former CIA deputy director of operations) didn't deserve this pro-secution."
