A day after undergoing seven hours of spinal surgery, New York Jets defensive end Dennis Byrd was stable and in satisfactory condition at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Byrd, who sat up and talked with his family, remained in the hospital's intensive care unit. A number of bone fragments were removed from the broken fifth vertabra during the operation and three metal plates were used to stabilize the damaged portion of the spinal cord.
