How athletes with Utah connections did in Winter Olympic competition Thursday:

John Aalberg, Salt Lake City, placed 18th (out of 110) and was the top American finisher with a time of 29:47.6 in the men's 10-kilometer classical technique cross-country race (won by Vegard Ulvang of Norway in 27:36).John Bauer, Park City, placed 23rd and was the No. 2 American with a time of 29:58.0 in the men's 10K cross-country race.

John Farra, Park City, placed 60th with a time of 32:06.0 in the men's 10K cross-country race.

Ingrid Butts, Park City, placed 47th (out of 62) and was the No. 2 American finisher with a time of 16:07.9 in the women's 5-kilometer classical technique cross-country race (won by Marjut Lukkarinen of Finland in 14:13.8).

Nelson Carmichael, Salt Lake City, placed third and won the bronze medal with a score of 24.82 in men's freestyle skiing mogul competition (won by Edgar Grospiron of France with a score of 25.81) See story on page D1.

Craig Rodman, Park City, placed 13th and was the No. 2 American finisher with a score of 21.18 in men's freestyle mogul competition.
