Students, parents and teachers are noticing that the 1991-92 Davis County School calendar has a "late" surprise - school doesn't end until Wednesday, June 10, probably the latest scheduled closing date in the district's history.
June 10 is more than a week beyond the usual ending date for Davis. Among Utah's 40 school districts, only Park City, which traditionally ends late, has a later ending date - June 12.A school district calendar committee made the recommendation that led to the late ending date.
"I know there's a lot of concern about June 10," said Garvin Carlile, chairman of the calendar committee and an area director for the Davis County School District.
Reasons for the late date include lack of air conditioning in many schools during late summer and the Labor Day holiday. But Carlile stressed that the late date is not going to be a trend, explaining the 1992-93 school year will begin Aug. 31 and end June 4.
Because Salt Lake and Weber school districts get out of school up to a week earlier than Davis, there may be concern about excessive absences during Davis' final week of school.
Carlile said each school has to submit a plan to the district of activities during the last week of school. He said academics are a high priority and the so-called "senior sluff day" is not an official part of the program.
The late date will affect students, teachers and parents in Davis County in various ways.
Lagoon (see related story) will probably be the hardest hit. But for most families, it likely means a little shorter summer and no early June vacations.
All in all, students in the Davis District don't go to school any longer than other districts. All students go to school 180 days. Carlile figures the worst thing that could happen is that an extra warm early June could undo the district's original reason for the late dismissal of school.
