To encourage her family to be environmentally conscious, Farrer Middle School student Marilouise Sowell posted notes throughout her house.

She advised family members reaching for a paper cup to use glass. She placed a note among the paper napkins suggesting the use of cloth instead.Farrer's "Ecology Week" made an impression on Marilouise. And event organizer Andrea Mortensen, a biology teacher, said awareness of environmental and related issues was the goal.

In order to raise students' consciousness, Mortensen assigned her seventh-graders to produce videos about the environment. Productions ranged from a presentation on recycling, in which Americans were called the "world's trashiest people," to a program on rain forests set to the music of the rock group U2.

On Tuesday, Max, the anti-litter character in the Utah Department of Transportation's Don't Waste Utah Campaign, visited the school.
