About 30 vehicles were involved in collisions or ran off the road Monday evening over the Malad Pass on I-15 about 25 miles north of the Utah border, Idaho State Police reported.
A Pocatello dispatcher said slick roads contributed to the accidents, which began about 7:30 p.m. and were spread over a 15-mile stretch in the northbound lanes. No fatalities were reported, but nine people were admitted to Bannock Regional Medical Center in Pocatello, a hospital spokeswoman said.
"I understand more are on the way but don't know how many yet," Katherine Ann Campbell said late Monday. "We were told to expect nine to 11."
She said one person was in critical condition but did not know the severity of other injuries or whether people had been taken to other hospitals.
Although the accidents were spread out, the dispatcher said most occurred within a two- to three-minute period.
