To the editor:
I was recently informed that the Kennedy/Roth amendment, which repeals the laws excluding women from military combat, has passed in the U.S. Senate and similar legislation has passed in the House of Representatives. While I support the rights of women to volunteer for military service in non-combat areas, I am appalled that this amendment may someday allow women to be drafted into military combat. I, for one, do not want my daughter forced to serve in the front lines of war.
In response to this amendment, President Bush has appointed a commission to study the impact of women serving in combat positions. If others are also worried about the ramifications of this amendment, this may be the last chance to express concerns to Bush at the White House.
