Management of school trust lands and economic development should be top state priorities, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stewart Hanson told a southern Utah gathering.

Hanson spoke to the Washington County Democratic Women, met with local party leaders and visited a food bank-homeless shelter during a visit to St. George.Hanson said he is a Democrat because people issues matter to him. He quoted Republican Gov. Norm Bangerter as saying of Democrats, "The problem is they're too concerned about people and people programs and not the larger picture."

Republicans, he said, "say government doesn't work, then they get elected and then they prove it."
