A swarm of African bees, provoked by a rock that smashed their hive, attacked a group of soccer fans in southeastern Brazil and fatally stung a 65-year-old woman, police said.
Police chief Ali Hassan Wanssal said Tuesday that 30 residents had gathered to watch an amateur soccer game Sunday in Valentim Gentil when a farmer hurled a rock at a hive underneath a water tower. The bees swarmed out and attacked the people, who ran to a bus parked nearby, Wanssal said. But they caught up with the woman.
He said she was stung by thousands of bees and died almost immediately. Four men were briefly hospitalized.
