Lance Deal set a world record in the 35-pound weight throw and Carl Lewis won his 12th national indoor title in the long jump Friday at the 104th U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the world record-holder in the heptathlon, was a double winner in her single-event specialties. She needed only two leaps to win the women's long jump and capped her performance with and easy victory in the 60-meter hurdles in the night's sprint finals.Utah's Doug Padilla, competing for Nike West, won the 3,000 in 7:49.14. Reuben Reina was second in 7:49.46 and Brian Abshire third in 7:50.35.

Lewis, without the competition of world record-holder Mike Powell, leaped a leisurely 27 feet, 43/4 inches (8.35 meters) to extend his winning streak at the U.S. Championships to 12 straight years.

Joyner-Kersee passed on her final four tries in the long jump to win the event at 22 feet, 51/4 inches (6.84m). In the 60-meter hurdles, it was mostly a matter of keeping up with herself.

Deal set the new standard in the weight throw with a toss of 80 feet, 11 inches, breaking his own record of 79 feet, 31/2 inches to win his fourth straight national title and fifth overall. In all, five throwers broke the 80-foot mark for the first time.
