A government survey indicates that a majority of adults in hard-working Japan complain of fatigue and emotional stress, the prime minister's office said Monday.

Asked whether they usually feel fatigue, 11 percent of the respondents said they felt very tired and 53 percent said they felt somewhat tired. At the same time, 53 percent said they felt stress, while 37 percent said they didn't feel much and 10 percent said not at all, the survey said.

The average Japanese employee worked 2,044 hours, including 185 hours of overtime, in fiscal 1990, which ended March 31, 1991, the Labor Ministry says. That is the equivalent of 51 40-hour weeks a year.
