For the 10th year, Brigham Young University will host a four-day symposium on science fiction and fantasy Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 5-8, at the Wilkinson Center.
More than 150 hours of programming is crammed in the four days, with panel discussions and lectures for writers, artists and anyone else interested in the genre. There also will be presentations on comics, Japanamation and role-playing games, as well as academic papers on science fiction works.The symposium will feature an art show in the Wilkinson Center Gallery by local science fiction and fantasy artists. Booths selling merchandise relevant to the field will be in the Garden Court. Several open gaming tournaments are also scheduled.
Jane Yolen, author of more than 100 books for both children and adults, will be the guest of honor. Her works range from poetry and non-fiction to fiction for all age groups. Her original fairy tale collections, such as "The Girl Who Cried Flowers," have been noted for their excellence.
Symposium activities begin daily at 9 a.m. with several events every hour until 9 p.m. It is open to the public. Registration is $15 at the door for all four days, or $5 a day. Ticket sales will be at the Varsity Theater Ticket Booth in the Wilkinson Center beginning the first day of the symposium. There is an additional charge for participation in gaming tournaments. The Saturday evening banquet with the guest lecturers is $10.
