About 130 vehicles collided in several pileups on foggy French highways Saturday, leaving 53 people injured, five of them seriously, police reported.

Police said the accidents occurred because motorists were driving too fast in the thick fog. Highways crowded because of annual school vacation contributed to the high number of vehicles involved, they said.About 100 cars were involved in two crashes on the A-31 highway near Thionville, about 175 miles east of Paris near the border with Luxembourg and Germany.
