EGYPTIAN POPULATION ROSE 1.3 MILLION IN '91, REPORT SAYS

Egypt's population rose by about 1.3 million in 1991 to 57.76 million, an increase of one baby about every 24 seconds, the head of the state agency for statistics said.

In an early Sunday edition the semiofficial newspaper al-Ahram quoted Farouk Abdel-Azim as saying the new population figure at Jan. 1 included some 2.5 million Egyptians working abroad.President Hosni Mubarak has repeatedly warned that over-population could jeopardize government efforts toward economic reform.
