Eight West Jordan boys were injured Saturday when a bomb made with dry ice and water in a plastic soda bottle exploded before they could toss it outside the van they were driving in.
Two of the boys, ages 14 and 15, were injured more seriously than the others, a Salt Lake County sheriff's report states. The 15-year-old, who was sitting between the two front seats, had put the dry ice and water in the bottle and shaken the mixture. As he tried to pass the bottle, either to the front-seat passenger or out the window, the bomb blew up, cutting his hands.
The explosion cut the 14-year-old, who was sitting on the floor behind the passenger seat, lacerating his face, eyes and hands.
The other boys - two 14-year-olds, a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old - received minor cuts.
The boys told a deputy sheriff that they didn't have anything to do that night, so they decided to make the dry-ice bomb.
