For the first time in memory, the Hibernian Society is excluding the mayor from its St. Patrick's Day feast. That's because for the first time ever the mayor is a woman.
"In the past, it's always been an all-male affair, and it will continue to be so," Hibernian Society President Thomas M. Spillane said Wednesday. "If you go back 180 years, it's always been the same thing - it's a male party."Mayor Susan Weiner, who unseated 21-year incumbent John Rousakis in November, was unfazed.
"I will respect the wishes of the Hibernian Society," she said.
The banquet dates to 1812, when Savannah's Hibernian Society was founded.
