`I SPY' PICTURE BOOK SERVES UP RIDDLES AMID TOYS AND TRINKETS

"I Spy: A Book of Picture Riddles," challenges children and adults to find hidden objects in vast, colorful landscapes constructed of toys and trinkets.

The 33-page, hard-cover book (Scholastic-Cartwheel, $10.95) contains 13 dozen riddles by Jean Marzollo ranging from Blocks (I spy a rabbit, 11 bears in all, A dog on a block, a seal on a ball) to Silhouettes.Photographer Walter Wick positioned and mounted each object contained in the two-page landscapes on pieces of clay to convey a three-dimensional quality. The landscapes were created in Wick's Connecticut studio.

"Extra Credit Riddles" are offered at the end of the book. Readers are also encouraged to write their own riddles from the pictures contained in the book.

Published on Jan. 1, "I Spy" has 200,550 copies in print, according to Scholastic Books. "I Spy" has been licensed in Portuguese, Spanish, Vasquez, Galician, Catalan, Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish, Danish and French.

Scheduled for publication by Marzollo and Wick later this year: "I Spy: A Book of Christmas Riddles."
