ANCIENT EGYPTIAN STATUE RETRIEVED 4 DAYS AFTER THEFT

The statue of ancient Egypt's goddess of war was retrieved four days after it was stolen from a temple in the southern town of Luxor, a newspaper reported.

Al-Ahram reported that police officers arrested four men as they were trying to smuggle the half-ton granite relic in the trunk of their Peugeot from Luxor, 450 miles south of Cairo, to the nearby town of Sohag.Police have been searching all cars leaving Luxor since the statue was discovered missing by guards, al-Ahram said.

The report identified the four thieves as workers but did not specify where they worked.

The large statue, dating from 1500 B.C., shows the goddess Sekhmet with the head of a lioness and the body of a woman.
