Lisa Salvatierra, the University of Utah's phenomenal young freshman, pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the collegiate season Wednesday by beating the No. 1 player in the country - Lisa Raymond of Florida at the Eccles Tennis Center.
Salvatierra handed Raymond only her second loss of the season, 6-3, 6-3. Later she teamed up with Ruth Ann Stevens to give Utah its second and other win in the dual meet by beating Kay Louthian and Holly Lloyd, 7-5, 6-1.Florida, currently the No. 1 ranked team in the country, beat Utah 7-2.
According to Utah coach John Tsumas, his team played well and "there were a couple of matches that could have gone either way."
Alison Bradford lost to Lloyd, 5-7, 7-6, 6-2, and the doubles team of Bradford and Heidi Chinchiola lost to Raymond and Brenner, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The Utes next play Oklahoma State on Friday at 4 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center.
