With a forecast of clouds and springlike temperatures, the Irish may be lucky enough not to get soaked by rain Saturday in the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m. at South Temple and Main Street and will move south along Main to 500 South."A Song for Ireland" is the theme for this year's parade, sponsored by the Hibernian Society and for which the Rev. Monsignor James Kenny, chaplain at St. Benedict's Hospital, Ogden, will be grand marshal. Maxine Pap is the parade chairwoman.

C.O. Young, meteorologist with the Salt Lake office of the National Weather Service, said that while the sky probably will be cloudy Saturday, the temperature at the time of the parade is likely to be close to 50.

Also, he said, rain is not likely Saturday.

Utahns can be sure of one thing. The Irish and their friends will have a good time at the parade.

Other events include a Leprechaun Lope, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Council Hall, located south of the state Capitol, and which will follow the parade route; an awards luncheon at 12:15 p.m. Saturday at the Hilton Hotel following the parade; a grand ball at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Hilton; an Irish Night with the Utah

Symphony at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 16, in Symphony Hall; a Catholic Mass in honor of St. Patrick at noon (to be followed by a luncheon) on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, at St. Patrick's Church, 1040 W. 400 South; and a night of Irish music (a sing-along) and poetry, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, St. Patrick's Day at Judge Memorial Catholic High School auditorium, 650 S. 1100 East.

The Leprechaun Lope is sponsored by Our Lady of Lourdes School. This can be either a 4-mile run for those who wish to run, or a 11/3-mile "health walk" for walkers. People in wheelchairs are welcome, say organizers. Registration, which is from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. at Council Hall, costs $13 for all participants. The events are a major fund-raiser for the school.

Reservations for the luncheon (the cost is $15.50) at Hilton Hotel may be made by calling Tom Corrigan, 278-4962. Reservations for the ball and dinner are $85 per couple or $42.50 for a single and may be made by calling Jane Larson, 467-1415.

Because of several events taking place Saturday - the Relief Society Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the St. Patrick's Day Parade and the Leprechaun Lope - several streets will be congested and two will be closed for a time, said Salt Lake police Sgt. Dana Orgill.

North Temple will be closed between West Temple and State streets from 8:30 a.m. to noon, while Main Street will be closed from 300 North to 600 South from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

"Cross-traffic will be allowed until about 9:30 a.m. Please make appropriate arrangements and expect delays," Orgill said.
