ROBBERY SUSPECT FLEES S.L. CAFE, RUNS SMACK INTO A UHP TROOPER

A man robbed and assaulted a waiter at a downtown Salt Lake restaurant last week.

A waiter at Olympus Cafe, 161 W. 600 South, was taking an order when the customer grabbed the pocket that contained the waiter's wallet. The waiter backed away and watched the customer put brass knuckles in his hand, a Salt Lake police report states. The customer then jumped up and attacked the waiter, striking him several times in the face. As he was beating him, he reached into the waiter's pocket, took his wallet and then ran out of the restaurant.

The suspect ran into a hotel parking lot and ran into a Utah Highway Patrol trooper. He arrested the 31-year-old Salt Lake man and booked him into jail for investigation of aggravated robbery, according to a police report.

The man told police he beat the waiter up because he made a pass at him. He said he took the wallet because he thought it was the best way to "get at somebody."
