4 DIE IN BOMBING OF ISRAELI EMBASSY IN BUENOS AIRES

A bomb destroyed the Israeli Embassy Tuesday afternoon, killing at at least four people and wounding 76, authorities said.

A police officer at the embassy site told a Reuters reporter he believed at least four people died and more victims could be under the rubble. Rescue workers said 76 people were injured.President Carlos Menem called the blast a "vestige of Nazism" in Argentina.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Witnesses said the embassy, which was several stories high, was almost destroyed and adjacent buildings badly damaged.

"All over the place there were people injured from shattered glass - women, children, pregnant women, old people. I could never imagine a scene like this," said witness Roberto Decournex.

Embassy sources said 70 people worked in the offices in an affluent neighborhood in central Buenos Aires. They added that the structure was built like a fortress.
