SANYO ELECTRIC CO. BUILDS HYBRID SOLAR CAR

Sanyo Electric Co. announced Wednesday a hybrid solar car powered by environmentally safe oxides and solar energy, using a combination of solar cells, rechargeable batteries and a fuel cell.

Unlike existing solar vehicles, the car, named Mirai-1, can draw on the fuel cell and storage batteries for operating on cloudy days and at night, a spokesman for the major consumer electronics maker said. The two-seat solar car costs $384,000 to build, the spokesman said.

The car, which weighs 881 pounds, is able to run at a maximum speed of 62 miles per hour and at 25 miles per hour for an hour on a six-hour charge of the fuel cell without solar cells' support, according to the company.
