CHARGE FILED IN OGDEN FIRE

A charge of aggravated arson has been filed against a resident of the Windsor Hotel in a fire that caused $4,100 damage and temporary evacuation of the three-story building.

John O. Goldhammer, 56, was arraigned Tuesday in 2nd Circuit Court.Goldhammer was arrested after he walked over to the Ogden police station and told a records clerk about the fire in his hotel room, police said.

The fire was started at 11:40 p.m. Monday in Room 20 on the third floor, said Ogden Fire Marshal Bob Wright.

Firefighters were dispatched to the hotel 18 minutes after Goldhammer walked into the police station, Wright said.

The marshal said clothes were set on fire in the closet.

Smoke detectors alerted residents, and when firefighters arrived, residents had the fire contained using extinguishers, Wright said.

"They had reduced the size of the fire. It was contained but it wasn't out. The firefighters were able to quickly knock it down and extinguish it within two minutes," he said.

The blaze caused smoke damage to the third floor, and water damage occurred on the first and second floors, Wright said.

Goldhammer was held in the Weber County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail. He faces a March 26 preliminary hearing.
