CHURCH PENSION FUND NOW UNDERFUNDED

The Christian Science Church has borrowed so much from its pension fund that the fund no longer contains enough to cover promised benefits, according to unidentified sources quoted in Monday's Boston Globe.

The sources said the fund has about $60 million. But the Globe also quoted an unidentified lawyer and church member as saying the church treasurer has said $100 million is needed for pensions for past and present employees.Al M. Carnesciali, manager of the church's legal and public affairs arm, said suggestions that the fund doesn't have enough money to cover promised benefits "would not bear up under careful review." He gave no details.
