Police shot and killed a man who grabbed at an officer's gun in Exposition Park near the finish line of the Los Angeles Marathon just minutes after Ireland's John Treacy won the race.
Treacy overcame leg cramps to win Sunday's race in 2 hours, 12 minutes and 28 seconds."I wanted a win before going to the Olympics," Treacy said.
In the women's division, Madina Biktajirova of the Commonwealth of Independent States won in a course-record 2:26:22. She also will go to Spain to compete in the Olympics.
It was the first major marathon win for Treacy, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist.
Treacy ran alone for the bulk of the race.
The men's runner-up was Joseildo Rocha, 27, of Brazil, who finished in 2:12:54. Third went to New Zealand's Peter Renner, 32, who finished in 2:14:13.
Police identified the slain man as Daryl Montgomery, 30, of suburban Inglewood. An autopsy was planned to determine whether he was under the influence of drugs.
