COUGAR WRESTLERS OUT AFTER 1ST DAY OF NCAAS

All of BYU's wrestlers were eliminated in Thursday's opening day of the NCAA Championships.

Junior Phil Armstrong won his opening match at 142 pounds against Stan Spilde of Wisconsin, 8-3, then lost to seventh-ranked Shannon Gillespie from Lock Haven (Pa.), 4-3, then lost to North Carolina's Dave Leonardis, 2-1, in the consolation bracket.Senior Rick Evans won his first match at 177 against Matt Kreider from Bloomsburg (Pa.), 13-6, then lost to top-ranked Rich Powers from Northern Iowa, 13-3, then was eliminated by Cal-Fullerton's Dwayne Buth, 10-6, in consolations.

Senior Robbie Winter lost his opening match at 150 to Rick Monge, 6-2, from Cal-Bakersfield. Monge then lost his next match to prevent Winter from returning through the consolation round.

Armstrong ends with a 24-8 record, Evans ends with a 21-8 mark and Winter finishes at 18-9-1. BYU stood in 42nd place with three points after the opening day.
