Jacob Michellini, 14 months old, of Seattle, climbs on an old log on a Seattle beach as the first day of spring arrived with mild temperatures and sun. The seasons changed from winter to spring at 3:48 a.m. EST Friday. Snow continued to fly in parts of the West, Midwest, New England and the Carolinas. Cold air moved across Southern California, bringing rain to coastal sections of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and snow to the higher elevations. Friday's low temperature for the Lower 48 states was 7 below zero at Houlton, Maine. Temperatures around the nation at 3 p.m. EST ranged from 20 at Roseau, Minn., to 84 in Florida at Fort Lauderdale, Homestead and Miami's Tamiami Airport.
