WORTHY OUT FOR SEASON AFTER SURGERY ON KNEE

Los Angeles Lakers forward James Worthy will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Friday after Worthy underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

The procedure was performed by the Lakers team physician, Dr. Stephen Lombardo, and was done to clean up debris. Worthy, 31, will begin a rehabilitation program as soon as possible.Worthy, who missed the last nine games, was leading the Lakers with a 19.9-point scoring average.

The Lakers are battling the cross-town Clippers for the eighth and final Western Conference playoff spot. The Clippers were a half-game ahead entering Friday's games.

To replace Worthy, the Lakers signed former NBA forward Cliff Robinson from Rapid Ciy of the CBA. Robinson, 32, spent 10 seasons in the NBA but had not been in the league since playing for Philadelphia during the 1988-89 season.
