HOLLYWOOD FILMMAKER HOPES TO SHOOT MOVIE ABOUT MAO IN CHINA

A Hollywood moviemaker is negotiating with the Chinese government to shoot a movie about Mao Tse-tung in China, an official newspaper said Friday.

"Mao Goes to Hollywood," the China Daily headlined its interview with Mark Rustad, vice president of Miracle Pictures, which wants to make the movie.China has made dozens of films about Mao, all completely laudatory. The China Daily did not say if the government wants to censor the American script in exchange for allowing filming in China and access to archival material.

Foreign filmmakers who have worked in China, including Bernardo Bertolucci, director of "The Last Emperor," have described a frustrating experience of tight official control and outrageous demands for money.
