Former Gov. George C. Wallace remained in serious condition Saturday, a day after he was connected to a machine to aid his breathing, a hospital official said.

Wallace entered University Hospital on Monday for treatment of chronic pain associated with the paralysis he suffered during a 1972 assassination attempt. He was placed on a ventilator when his condition deteriorated Friday night, said hospital spokeswoman Pam Jones.Wallace, 72, showed some improvement Saturday but he was kept on the ventilator and his condition was still listed as serious, Jones said.
