WORKERS DOWN TO LAST DROP AS COFFEE PLANT PULLS THE PLUG

The city once known for its coffee is down to the last drop.

The landmark Maxwell House coffee plant on Hoboken's Hudson River waterfront made its last can of coffee March 4. About 250 workers who remained to close the plant will work their last shifts Tuesday.Union workers offered labor concessions after Maxwell House's parent company, General Foods USA, said either the Hoboken plant or one in Jacksonville, Fla., would have to close. The city, county and state put together a $7.1 million financial incentive package. But General Foods announced the closing in 1990.
