Romanian President Ion Iliescu offered Saturday to help Moldova build up its armed forces but said Romania would not get involved in ethnic fighting in the former Soviet republic.

"We do not rule out the possibility of granting support to Moldova to build its armed forces, but Romania will never get involved in any military conflict there," he told journalists at Bucharest's international airport.Almost 30 people have been killed in clashes this month between Moldova's Romanian-speaking majority and its Russian-speaking minority.

Iliescu was seeing off Moldovan President Mircea Snegur, who paid a six-hour visit to Romania with Moldovan Prime Minister Valeriu Muravschi and parliamentay chairman Alexandru Mosanu.

Moldova's minorities fear unification with Romania, which ruled most of the republic until Moscow annexed the area in 1940.
