COUGARS SHINE IN 1ST OUTDOOR MEET

In their first outdoor meet of the season, BYU's standout sprinter and two All-Americans surpassed women's NCAA provisional qualifying marks at the Willie Williams Track and Field Classic in the Drachman Stadium Friday and Saturday.

Newcomer Cathie Guischard, Trinidad, W.I., qualified in the 200 dash in a first-place clocking of 23.8, one-tenth of a second better than the provisional time of 23.9.A double winner for the Cougars, Guischard nabbed first place in the 100 dash in 11.92.

Two-time All-American heptathlete Anu Kaljurand lofted the javelin 161-7 for a winning distance, easily passing the provisional mark of 153-61/2; and defending NCAA discus champion Anna Mosdell threw 172-10 for third place, falling short of automatic qualification by 13 inches.

A first-place run of 16:52.5 in the 5000 was notched by Leanne Whitesides, another Cougar All-American. She missed provisional qualification by eight seconds.
