SURGEON GENERAL IS UPSET THAT ADS IGNORE RISKS OF MIXING BEER, SPORTS

The surgeon general is upset that television ads that depict beer-drinking young people appearing to have a ball racing cars and surfing ignores the fact that drinking makes such activities more dangerous.

"It is no coincidence that sports such as boating, swimming, skiing, surfing, car racing and mountain climbing - which have strong links to alcohol-related injuries - are the very activities glamorized in alcohol beverage ads and promotions," Antonia Novello said Monday at a national conference on alcohol abuse prevention."I have asked them to stop using any ads that lead our youth to think they can ski, swim, scuba dive or race cars better if they drink," she said. "In short, we are doing everything we can to change the way Americans think and act with regard to the use and misuse of alcohol."
